What Will Happen If Your Company Violates U.S. Consumer Product Safety Laws?
Product safety is crucial, and companies that devote the necessary time and resources to develop and deploy secure, high-quality products can avoid the risk of U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) violations.

Even a single CPSC penalty can cause long-lasting damage to a company's brand reputation. However, business managers can learn from past CPSC guideline violators to ensure their companies meet CPSC standards at all times.
ConsumerSafety-Large
For example, Hung Lam, President of LM Import-Export, recently was sentenced to 22 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to traffic and smuggle in banned children's products that contained lead and small parts. Lam also was fined $10,000 and convicted of one count of trafficking counterfeit goods.

According to CPSC, Lam and LM Import-Export conspired to sell and distribute banned children's products imported from China – a violation of the Consumer Product Safety Act and the Federal Hazardous Substances Act. In addition, these products allegedly presented the risk of choking, aspiration and ingestion, CPSC said, and some contained lead above the federal limits.

Clearly, the negative effects of releasing defective products can spread far beyond a business' bottom line. And in the case of LM Import-Export, the company may never recover from the substantial brand reputation damage it likely suffered as a result of its president's actions.

LM Import-Export, however, does offer a valuable lesson for business managers.

This company showed that CPSC officials are unafraid to take action against negligent parties that put consumers at risk. Furthermore, LM Import-Export highlighted the importance of complying with CPSC guidelines, along with the risks associated with non-compliance.

CPSC standards are in place for a reason – to protect consumers. Business managers that implement a comprehensive approach to product safety can avoid CPSC fines and penalties, but finding the best way to minimize product defects can challenge even the biggest companies.

Fortunately, a new tool is available that takes the guesswork out of product quality evaluations – PolyVista Alerts+.
